Brown can’t contain himself

It had to happen.  Brown has broken his summer silence and written an open letter about the NHS.  It is stomach churning stuff:

I have been profoundly moved by the enormous groundswell of support for the NHS in the last few days.  A genuinely National Health Service – introduced by a Labour government in the teeth of opposition from the Conservatives and the medical establishment – is one of our nation’s finest achievements.

That truth is that there are two Tory faces on the NHS.  Behind all the recent talk of commitment, the party has not truly been reformed.  Despite all their talk of reform, the Conservatives still put special interests before patients’ interests.

And he we have it:

This is not just a debate for this week. It is central to everything we believe in and care about. And I am determined to take the fight to the Tories, not just today, but in the weeks and months ahead.

Be warned.  Well, you were earlier. Brown is going to behave like a dog with a bone over this.  There will be no stopping him.  He will be looking for any excuse to curtail his holiday.

Stand-by for hospital visits galore (will we get one while he is in the Lake District?) from the man who uses a private dentist.

  1. I'm convinced Brown is picking the wrong fight. No-one really cares what a Tory MEP says on the NHS. Cameon has spent a long time convincing voters that the NHS is safe in Tory hands. No-one is proposing anything other than a free-at-the-point-of-delivery universal healthcare system and any proposals are points of details.

The real issues of concern are the economy - the continued recession - and Afghanistan. Brown's narrative will run out once the Afghan elections are over, and General Dannatt will not go quietly either.
