Radio 4’s Great Lives is a fascinating series. The latest episode features Roy Jenkins, one of the only politicians who changed the political weather without becoming Prime Minister. He was also an acclaimed political biographer. The latter is hardly touched on in the programme, which is a misjudgement in any appraisal of Jenkins life.
He was one of the three politicians of the post-war period who should have become Prime Minister, the other two being R A Butler and Denis Healey.
It would not take much imagination to wonder what Jenkins would think of the present occupant of No10.
I rather liked dear old Roy. He had the 'father figure' about him.
