Are Brown and Darling saying the same thing?

As expectations continue about what will or will not be achieved at the G20, two statements have been made.

At the the No10 lobby briefing the PM’s spokesman said:

We're not going to get into any ridiculous media expectation game.

Now Darling:

We need to be realistic about what we can do together - when you have twenty people sitting around a table, inevitably there will be a difference of emphasis at times, but this is part of a process. It won't begin and end in April.

What to make of this.  Are Brown and Darling both lowering expectations as there will not be a major break through?  Or is Brown setting out to deliberately play the whole thing down knowing there will a big bang announcement?

No doubt the media will drive a wedge between these two quotes even if there is not one to be had.

The Brown bunker needs to speak with one voice, otherwise the rumours of splits between 10 and 11 Downing Street will get out of control.

If the host country can’t even agree a line, what hope is there of persuading the other G20 members to back Moses.

  1. I don't think Darling and Brown are talking at all by all accounts!
