Charles Clarke has fallen for the Blair charm trick big time. An extract for an article to be published in the New Statesman states:
The former cabinet heavyweight, who also served as Labour chairman and education secretary, said he and Mr Blair had discussed his future in more detail at Chequers a week after he left the cabinet.
"He had a great plan, apparently, that he wanted me to be foreign secretary because he thought that if I had been foreign secretary and home secretary I would be a credible opponent to Gordon as the leader of the party”
Blair said this after he was sacked which Clarke obviously believed. There is no dispute that Blair wanted to stop Brown, but I do not believe with any seriousness that he wanted Charles Clarke.
We all have an ego but some of us are not so vain.
