Richie Benaud to retire

image

It is reported, and comes as no surprise that at the age of 78, that Richie Benuad will retire in 2010 from cricket commentary.  No other person has given so much to the enjoyment of watching cricket on TV.  His dry wit and perceptive comments will be missed.  He is also the master of when not to say anything, so lacking with present day commentators.

He belongs to a unique team of commentators from another age.  Henry Longhurst, Jim Laker, Brian Johnston, John Arlott, David Colemen, Ken Wolstenholme, Peter O’Sullivan, and Harry Carpenter dominated BBC coverage of sport for many years, and much of my life besides

I wish him well.
