Judd Gregg has withdrawn as nominee for commerce secretary because of policy differences with the Obama administration. Five nominees have now been lost.
The vetting process used clearly has not been robust and now Obama has a huge credibility problem on his hands with his cabinet appointments. Add to this the messy passage of his stimulus bill, and the perception of his initial period of office is one of haste and carelessness.
Obama needs to quickly and effectively deal with these “little local difficulties”. His ability to be shape events on the world stage will not be helped if he cannot perform credibly on the home front.
The G20 must be further from his mind at present than Brown would ideally like.
