Long ago, The Times famously said:
Lord George-Brown drunk is a better man than the Prime Minister sober.
The Prime Minister being Harold Wilson.
Last night on Radio 4's Any Questions, Ken Clarke unintentionally referred to Gordon Brown as George Brown:
To listen to Ed [Balls] going on about how we're threatened with cuts in public expenditure if we let go of Mister George Brown, who has been conducting the finances of this - Gordon Brown, yes - George Brown.
I'm revealing my age. George Brown would have made a much better job.
Indeed he would have done.
