Geoffrey Wheatcroft, the master wordsmith, who once published a book with a title that was economical with the truth, is to leave these damp islands for the election campaign:
Tomorrow Gordon Brown will ask for a dissolution of parliament, and on Sunday week I shall fly away. An engagement to lecture at the University of Texas means that I shall be out of the country for most of the election campaign.
And I don't care. My absence is of no concern at all to anyone else.
Got that right.
